September 23: Birding at Carpenter’s Woods, a Hotspot for Migrants

Carpenter’s Woods was originally added to the Fairmount Park system during the 1920s as a bird sanctuary. Since then it has remained one of the most popular and important locations in the Philadelphia region to find migrating land birds.

Keith Russell, Audobon Pennsylvania Program Manager for Urban Conservation, will be leading a bird walk in the woods on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. We should see a variety of species including warblers, vireos, thrushes, flycatchers, and rarities like red-headed woodpecker, olive-sided flycatcher and goldenwinged warbler are possible.

We will meet at Carpenter’s Woods located in West Mt. Airy in northwest Philadelphia. Gather at the parking area where Wayne Avenue intersects with Sedgwick Street along the south side of the woods. Bring your binoculars.
